Belur Math : A Serene Holy Place

Belur Math is located on the west bank of Hooghly River at Belur, near Kolkata, West Bengal, India the Mission was founded  by Swami Vivekananda. a parivrajaka – wandering monk  and  foremost disciple of 19th century mystic monk  Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (1836-1886) founder of  the math. In his early days he was a priest in the famous Kali temple, Dakhsineswar.

We have heard so much about Belur Math, headquarter of Ramkrishna Mission. The area of Belur Math is big area with Museum, Library and University etc.inside it. Not every part but some part like Temples, Museums are open to all visitors.The Math complex includes temples is devoted to Sri Ramakrishna, Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda.

Belur Math Timing: 

Opening Time: April – Sep (6.00am-12pm) & (4.00am-8pm)

Oct- March (6.30am- 11.30am) & (3.30pm- 6.30pm)

The main reason to establish this mission is to develop better human faculties, social equality, spiritual fulfilment and societal harmony. The Math is simply a secular institution and the focus is on humanity and their happiness.

The ground plan of the temple is in the shape of a cross; the tall structures – towers looks like the temples of south India. Windows, hanging balconies and the umbrella shaped domes on top are followed by Rajput and Mogul styles. The front part of the building influences Buddhists architectural features.

Durga Puja in Belur math is also very popular specially the visarjan ( idol immersion). Everyone is not allowed to click the photo inside the temple.

The Ramakrishna mission is engaged in numerous social activities in many places, including rural India such as medical treatment for the underprivileged, educational institutions, etc.

According to the mission Belur Math is, “a symphony in architecture” – symbolic of secularism.
